Overview: The 2024 Acura MDX Type S Advance SUV is a carryover from 2023, which is fine since the ’23 model was so well executed. The Type S puts an emphasis on sporty driving and interior comfort over off-road trail bashing. This three-row midsize all-wheel-drive SUV is as stylish as it is versatile and capable. The 2024 Acura MDX is available in several trim levels, with the Type S Advance being the top model.

Walkaround: The 2024 Acura MDX Type S is handsomely styled, favoring sleekness over added cladding and pseudo off-roading elements. Brembo high-performance brakes can be seen behind the sharp 21-inch alloy wheels and P275/40R21 tires. There are four exhaust tips — all elements in keeping with the MDX’s sporty performance nature.

2023 Acura MDXInterior: The Advance package is the top interior trim option, with perforated leather sport seats and power lumbar for both front seats as well as nine-way, power massage function. The heated and vented seats are both supportive and comfortable. Front legroom is outstanding and the power tilt and telescopic steering column makes finding the ideal driving position easy. Our tester had bold, red upholstery, which was fun although maybe not for everyone. Second-row seating for three was comfortable, but the third row was kid-sized. Cargo space and versatility were excellent, including added storage under the flat cargo deck. A panoramic moonroof with slide and tilt filled the interior with light.

Behind the wheel: The driving experience was very enjoyable for this size of vehicle. The highway ride was smooth and pleasant. Acceleration was sporty, as was the driver’s connection to road conditions and steering input. The MDX can be enjoyably driven either relaxed or spiritedly. The Acura MDX has an impressive suite of standard safety features. The Advance package includes a head-up display. Fuel economy was so-so, with our best at 22.8 mpg on the highway and our worst at 16.8 mpg for city driving.

Bottom line: The 2024 Acura MDX SH-AWD Type S Advance is a very stylish, quite sporty three-row midsize SUV that has a personality more in keeping with a sport wagon than a truck. It’s a little big for a sport wagon, but it looks and behaves more like an XL sport wagon with the Type S equipment. As an SUV, the MDX size is fine, with a lot of comfort, passenger room, luxury, cargo capacity and versatility, as well as driving fun and enjoyment — efficiently packaged in a handsome wrapper.
