New Small Block V8 for GM?

GM has confirmed that a fifth-generation, direct-injected small block V-8 in multiple displacements will be among its 2014 offerings. However, details such as specific displacement numbers, output, and fuel economy, have not been officially released.

But Buffalo Business First the local business newspaper in the Buffalo, New York area, recently ran a piece on GM’s investment in its Tonawanda, NY facility to add a third engine line to make a new V-8 engine. That Tonawanda would be one of the locations where the new engine would be produced was actually announced more than two years ago. The paper has published what is believed to be a photo of the fifth-generation small block, with plant manager Steve Finch standing next to the new engine.
Similarities to the current fourth-generation small block are obvious, including oval-shaped valve covers, and valve cover–mounted ignition coils. There are also prominent “lumps” on the valve covers, which it is speculated may house the new direct injectors.
